Notary Interpreter in Lisbon

Notary appointments in Portugal are formal legal proceedings. The notary reads documents aloud in Portuguese, explains the legal implications, and asks you to confirm your understanding before signing. If you don’t speak Portuguese, you’re signing binding legal documents without fully understanding what they say.

When you need a notary interpreter

Property purchases

The most common reason expats need a notary interpreter is for the signing of a property deed (escritura). The notary reads the entire deed aloud in Portuguese, including the property description, the price, the payment terms, any encumbrances or charges on the property, and the legal obligations of both parties. This can take 30 to 60 minutes for a complex transaction. I interpret everything in real time so you understand exactly what you’re committing to.

I also recommend having the escritura translated in advance so you can review it before the appointment. Combining a pre-signing translation with in-person interpretation on the day is the safest approach.

Powers of attorney

If you’re executing a power of attorney at a Portuguese notary, the notary needs to confirm that you understand the authority you’re granting. I interpret the notary’s explanation and your responses so there’s no ambiguity about what you’re authorising.

Company formation

Setting up a company in Portugal involves notarial acts for the articles of incorporation and other founding documents. I interpret at these appointments so you understand the legal structure being created and the obligations you’re taking on.

Certification of documents

If you’re having documents certified or authenticated by a Portuguese notary (such as translations, copies, or signature recognition), I can interpret the process and ensure you understand what’s being certified and why.

Wills and estate planning

If you’re making a Portuguese will or updating estate planning documents at a notary, understanding the exact terms is critical. I interpret so you’re confident that the document reflects your wishes.

Loan and mortgage signings

Mortgage agreements are signed before a notary in Portugal. The terms, interest rates, repayment schedules, and default provisions are all read aloud in Portuguese. I interpret so you understand every financial obligation before signing.

What I do

Before the appointment

I review any documents the notary will be presenting, if available in advance. For property purchases, I recommend getting the deed translated before the signing so you’ve already read it in English. I’ll brief you on the format of the appointment, what the notary will do, and what you’ll be asked.

During the appointment

I sit beside you and interpret everything the notary says. Portuguese notaries are thorough. They read documents in full, explain legal consequences, and ask you to confirm your understanding at multiple points. I translate all of this into English and your responses back into Portuguese.

If you have questions for the notary, I relay them and interpret the answers. This is your opportunity to clarify anything before signing, and having an interpreter means you can actually use it.

After the appointment

I make sure you understand any documents you’ve signed, any copies you’ve received, and any next steps (such as registering a property purchase at the land registry).

What it costs

Notary appointment interpretation starts from €180. The price depends on the expected length and complexity of the appointment. A straightforward signature recognition takes less time than a property deed signing with a mortgage.

Frequently asked questions

Is a notary appointment the same as a solicitor’s meeting? Not exactly. In Portugal, the notary is a public official who authenticates documents and witnesses signatures. They are neutral and don’t represent either party. Your lawyer represents your interests. The notary ensures the legal formalities are properly observed.

Can the notary speak English instead? Some notaries in Lisbon speak English informally, but the official proceedings must be conducted in Portuguese. Even if the notary can chat with you in English, the reading of documents and formal declarations happens in Portuguese.

Should I have the deed translated before the signing? Yes, strongly recommended. Reading a translated deed in advance lets you review the terms carefully and raise any questions with your lawyer before the signing, rather than hearing it for the first time while the notary reads it aloud.

Do you travel to notary offices outside Lisbon? Yes. I’m based in Lisbon and regularly work in Cascais, Sintra, and Setúbal. For appointments further afield, a travel fee may apply.
