Legal and Court Interpreter in Lisbon

Legal proceedings in Portugal are conducted in Portuguese. If you’re involved in a court case, meeting with a Portuguese lawyer, or dealing with any legal process, you need to understand exactly what’s being said and make yourself understood precisely. In legal contexts, a misunderstood word can change the meaning of a statement entirely.

I provide certified English–Portuguese interpretation for court hearings, lawyer meetings, and legal proceedings in Lisbon. I’m listed on the GOV.UK directory of translators and interpreters for British nationals in Portugal, specifically approved for courts and legal interpretation.

Court hearings. If you’re a party to a legal case in Portugal, whether civil, criminal, or family, and you don’t speak Portuguese, you need an interpreter at the hearing. The judge, lawyers, and witnesses will all speak Portuguese, and you need to understand the proceedings and be able to respond accurately.

Meetings with your Portuguese lawyer. Even if your lawyer speaks English, there are situations where having an interpreter present ensures complete accuracy: reviewing complex legal documents, discussing strategy for a court case, or going through the details of a contract or settlement.

Police station visits. If you need to file a police report (for theft, an accident, assault, or any other incident), the report is taken in Portuguese. An interpreter ensures your statement is recorded accurately, which matters if the case goes further.

Mediation and arbitration. Alternative dispute resolution proceedings in Portugal are typically conducted in Portuguese. I interpret so you can participate fully in the process.

Tax disputes and Finanças proceedings. If you’re dealing with a tax dispute or an audit by the Portuguese tax authority, having an interpreter ensures you understand the issues being raised and can respond appropriately.

Employment disputes. If you’re involved in a workplace dispute that goes to the Portuguese labour tribunal (Tribunal do Trabalho), I interpret at hearings and meetings with your lawyer.

Immigration legal matters. If your immigration case involves legal proceedings beyond the standard AIMA appointment, such as an appeal or a judicial review, I interpret at those proceedings.

Giving statements or depositions. If you need to give a formal statement to a Portuguese authority or as part of legal proceedings, accurate interpretation is essential. What you say will be recorded and may be used in court.

Legal interpretation requires more than language fluency. It requires understanding legal concepts, procedural terminology, and the formal register used in Portuguese courts and legal offices.

I trained and practised as a lawyer in Brazil. I understand legal systems, court procedures, and the specific vocabulary used in legal proceedings. When a judge uses a legal term, I don’t just find the closest English word. I find the correct legal equivalent so you understand not just the words but the legal significance.

I also work in compliance and anti-money laundering, which means I deal with regulatory and legal language daily. This background directly supports the precision required in legal interpretation.

What it costs

Legal and court interpretation starts from €180 per appointment or hearing. The price depends on the expected length and complexity. A short lawyer meeting is simpler than a full-day court hearing.

For ongoing legal matters that involve multiple hearings or meetings, I’m happy to discuss a retainer or package arrangement.

If you also need legal documents translated, such as divorce decrees, contracts, court orders, or powers of attorney, those are priced separately.

See the full pricing page for details.
