The Conservatória do Registo Civil is where some of the most important moments of your life in Portugal are made official: registering your child’s birth, transcribing your marriage, updating your civil status, or applying for Portuguese citizenship. Everything happens in Portuguese, and if you don’t speak the language, you need a certified interpreter.

What the Conservatória handles

The Conservatória do Registo Civil is Portugal’s civil registry office. It’s where all major civil events are recorded: births, marriages, deaths, divorces, name changes, and citizenship applications. If you’re a foreign national living in Portugal, you’ll likely visit the Conservatória at least once, and most expats end up going several times.

Every appointment is conducted in Portuguese. The registrar won’t switch to English, even in Lisbon where English is widely spoken in other contexts. The Conservatória is a formal, legal environment, and all proceedings happen in the official language.

Birth registration

When your child is born in Portugal and one or both parents are foreign nationals, you need to register the birth at the Conservatória. This involves presenting your birth certificates, passports, proof of residence, and the hospital’s birth declaration. The registrar will ask questions about the parents’ details, the child’s name, and nationality. Having an interpreter ensures you understand everything and that the child’s details are recorded correctly. A spelling mistake at this stage follows your child through every document for years.

Marriage registration and transcription

If you’re getting married in Portugal or transcribing a foreign marriage to the Portuguese civil registry, the Conservatória handles the entire process. For weddings, I offer a dedicated wedding interpreter service that covers the ceremony itself. For marriage transcriptions (registering an existing foreign marriage), the appointment is a documentary process where the registrar reviews your marriage certificate, birth certificates, and supporting documents. Divorce registration

If you divorced abroad and need the divorce recognised in Portugal, the process involves submitting your divorce decree to the Conservatória (after court recognition). If your name has changed (through marriage, divorce, or other legal process) and you need the Portuguese civil registry updated, the appointment involves explaining the change and providing supporting documentation. Death registration

Before the appointment

I review your documents to check they’re complete and correctly prepared. The Conservatória is strict about document requirements, and a missing apostille or an incomplete translation can mean a wasted appointment. I’ll flag any issues and, if needed, handle additional document translations before the appointment.

During the appointment

Frequently asked questions

Is the Conservatória appointment conducted in Portuguese? Yes, always. The registrar will not conduct the appointment in English, even if they speak it. All proceedings are in Portuguese.

Can my partner or a friend interpret for me? For general appointments like birth registrations and transcriptions, having someone with you to help communicate is usually accepted. However, for marriage ceremonies, the interpreter must be an independent, certified professional. Either way, a certified interpreter ensures accuracy and avoids miscommunication on important legal matters.

Which Conservatória should I go to? It depends on your address and the type of appointment. Some processes can be handled at any Conservatória, while others must be done at the office covering your area of residence. I can help you work out which one.

How far in advance should I book? As soon as you have your appointment confirmed. Ideally two to three weeks before, so I can review your documents and arrange any additional translations if needed.
