Certified Translation for Portugal (English to Portuguese)

All translations are certified by a Portuguese lawyer, as required by Portuguese law. This certification is what gives the translation legal standing in Portugal – without it, your document will be turned away at the counter.

When you’ll need this

Transcribing your marriage to the Portuguese civil registry. If you married outside Portugal and now live here, you’ll likely want – or need – your marriage recognised under Portuguese law. The Conservatória requires a certified Portuguese translation of your original marriage certificate, along with an apostille from the issuing country.

Applying for a residence permit through AIMA. Whether you’re on a D7 visa, a digital nomad visa, or applying through family reunification, AIMA requires certified translations of all supporting documents that aren’t in Portuguese. Your marriage certificate is typically part of this package.

Family reunification. If your spouse is joining you in Portugal, or you’re joining them, the marriage certificate is the foundational document that proves the relationship.

Applying for Portuguese citizenship. After meeting the residency requirements, your marriage certificate forms part of the citizenship application. It must be translated and certified.

Opening a joint bank account. Some Portuguese banks require a translated marriage certificate to open a joint account for married couples where one or both partners are foreign nationals.

Property purchases. If you’re buying property as a married couple, the notary handling the deed may require a certified translation of your marriage certificate to confirm your marital status and property regime.

Tax and financial matters. Filing taxes jointly or claiming spouse-related benefits through Finanças may require proof of marriage in Portuguese.

What’s involved

A marriage certificate translation isn’t just converting words from one language to another. The translation must faithfully reproduce every element of the original document – names, dates, registration numbers, official stamps, and any annotations or amendments.

Portuguese authorities are particular about completeness. A translation that omits a registration number, a marginal note, or an amendment annotation can be rejected at the counter. Once the translation is complete, it’s certified by a Portuguese lawyer, who formally confirms that the translation faithfully corresponds to the original. This certification is what gives the translation legal standing in Portugal.

UK Authorised Translation (Portuguese to English)

If you’ve married in Portugal or hold a Portuguese marriage certificate and need it recognised in the UK, I personally translate your document from Portuguese into English.

UK solicitors and legal proceedings. If your UK solicitor needs your Portuguese marriage certificate for property transactions, estate planning, or family law matters, they’ll need an authorised English translation.

UK visa and immigration. If your spouse is applying for a UK visa based on your marriage in Portugal, an authorised translation of the Portuguese marriage certificate will be part of the application.

Informal Translation for Personal Understanding

Sometimes you just need to understand what a Portuguese marriage certificate says – perhaps you’ve received one from a Portuguese registry and want to know what’s in it before deciding on next steps. Apostille

If your marriage certificate was issued in a country that’s part of the Hague Convention (which includes the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and most of Europe), it will need an apostille from the issuing country before the translation can be used officially in Portugal. The apostille must be on the original document before the translation is done, not after.
